History

Longtail Studios is a videogame developer started by Gérard Guillemot, one of the cofounders of Ubisoft Entertainment. The founding mission of the company was to create character driven video games. Now Longtail Studios is primarily focused on bringing the fun of games to new audiences under Ubisoft’s Games For Everyone division.

Located in Halifax, Nova Scotia- Canada, Longtail Studios has experience developing for several platforms including the Xbox 360 Kinect, Playstation 3 Move, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, and iOS. See below, for more information about the city.

Quality of life

Longtail Studios doesn’t want to be the place people punch-in for work; we want to be the place people are excited to go every day.  The people who work at Longtail are passionate about games.  They love playing games, talking about games, and of course, making games.

We believe better work environments, good tech and tools, open communication and a collaborative atmosphere make happy game developers and better games. Our teammates are the backbone of our company and we take care of them.  Longtail offers comprehensive health, medical, dental and vision insurance programs for our employees and their families.  Also during the summer, employees can take advantage of a condensed schedule which turns Friday into a half day.

Sometimes in game development, working over-time is unavoidable when you want to deliver the best game possible. But at Longtail Studios, we fully compensate extra hours with days off. When people give their best, we want to do the same.

Teamwork and Scrum

Creating the best video games is about collaboration, teamwork and good communication between the teams. Our offices are relaxed, open environments, designed for game development.  We make sure that everyone has a way to communicate directly and efficiently with their colleagues.

For the management of its projects, Longtail Studios uses the agile development method known as Scrum. It allows us to greatly improve the productivity of our teams and rests upon our company’s most important values: team spirit, good communication, simplicity, efficiency, quality, and flexibility.

If this suits you, do not hesitate to consult the Career section for all the opportunities or just send a cover letter, your resume, demo reel to jobs@longtailstudios.com.

Moving to a new place can sometimes seem complicated. Longtail Studios will take care of paperwork for you, everything from job permits to applications for the selection certificate. We can even help you find a place to call home within your new city. Longtail will also provide you with financial assistance for your relocation, making sure you’ll feel great both at work and home.

HALIFAX

Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia and the largest City in the Maritimes (the Eastern Seaboard / Atlantic region of Canada), with a population of around 350,000. It's a modern port city, teeming with both culture and heritage.

Halifax has an exceptional quality of living at an affordable cost. Located right downtown and minutes away from the harbor and its sights, Longtail Studios is in the heart of Halifax. In every direction you can find amazing shops and some of the best restaurants Nova Scotia has to offer.

Tons of nightlife also surrounds the Studio and you’ll never have to go far to find great time with great people. A few blocks down and you’ll be at the historic harbor front where you can see all types of ships and vessels, from military, to yachts to cruiseships as well as more amazing shops and restaurants - and talk about great seafood!

Halifax is an awesome little city that thinks big. It has everything you want in a larger city but all the local flavor of a small city.

Getting out to the countryside and the beautiful coastal areas couldn't be easier. Population density is low and traffic jams are pretty much unheard of.

Halifax mixes the old and the new. The Historic Propertes section of town is well preserved and is a nice place to spend an afternoon.

Peggy's Cove, just 20 minutes outside of the city along the 'Lighthouse trail' is a local tourist hotspot

Halifax downtown has a wealth of independent shops and isn't dominated by the national chainstores

The Public Gardens are a Victorian ornamental park, right in the heart of downtown. It's a great spot to spend a summer's afternoon.

The ferry runs across the harbour between Darmouth and Halifax every 20 minutes

Aerial view of the city and Halifax harbour; the second-largest harbour in the world!

Tall-ships are a regular sight along the harbour boardwalk during the summer

« I came to Halifax to do nothing less than create the best player experiences possible. The team here is awesome, creative, and fun, but most of all poised to do something truly great. It’s an exciting place to walk into every day. »

« I moved to Halifax from the other side of the country to work at Longtail. It’s been a great adventure, and I count myself very lucky to be a part of such a passionate, agile team! I see big things in Longtail’s future, and am excited to be a part of it. And being able to see the ocean from where I work ain’t bad either! »

« In the art department we get a lot of creative freedom, freedom to experiment and try out new ideas. For any artist that is one of best kind of working environments to have, that kind of freedom is what makes great games. Of course that would be nothing without a talented team to implement all these ideas, and Longtail has a fantastic team of artists, animators, designers and programmers who all want to make great games.  »

« The work atmosphere here at Longtail is pretty great. There’s a great deal of collaboration, and the wide open floor space makes it extremely easy to sit down and work things out with friends and colleagues. Working with such a strong team means not only that I'm constantly learning new things, but that I get to see the whole office 'level up' with each game we make. »
